Both metal and tiled roofs can be coated using the IRC system, and even gutters can be painted to match the finished roof colour.

Thermal HRC in detail: suited to an appropriately primed metal or tile roof, Thermal HRC covers approximately six square metres per litre and comes in 15-litre drums. Application is a standard 2-coat system over primer using airless spray equipment, and clean-up is straightforward with water.

Getting the prep right is just as important as the topcoat, and IRC's primer range covers the different surfaces you'll come across on a Northern Rivers roof:

Terra Glaze for unglazed terracotta: where a client has unglazed terracotta tiles that have lost their shine, Terra Glaze is a penetrating glaze that soaks into the tile surface to repel water, dirt and staining while restoring a natural glossy finish, rather than laying down an opaque colour coat. It's applied as a single mist coat over a primed, repaired surface using airless spray equipment, covers approximately nine square metres per litre from a 15-litre drum, and cleans up with water. Terra Glaze carries a 2-year warranty, shorter than the Roof Protect range, so it's worth setting client expectations accordingly if they're comparing it to a full colour restoration.

If a client wants a full colour change on a terracotta roof rather than a natural glaze finish, Roof Protect with the Terracotta Primer is the more suitable system, we can advise on which option fits the look and budget the client's after.

IRC's 15 and 20-year warranties are conditional, so it pays to know exactly what's required before you start:

The 3-coat system. Warranty coverage requires one coat of the correct primer followed by two coats of the Roof Protect membrane.
An accredited applicator. The system must be applied by a licensed contractor who is also officially accredited by IRC to keep the warranty valid.
Ongoing maintenance. Homeowners need to follow the post-application care instructions provided with every IRC paint purchase.
Surface-specific products. Using the correct primer and coating for the surface, particularly on terracotta, prevents the premature peeling that voids warranty claims.
